{"id":2324,"date":"2017-10-31T09:07:14","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T09:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoplecert.wpengine.com\/getbusy\/?p=2324\/"},"modified":"2017-11-07T15:16:14","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T15:16:14","slug":"millennials-shouldnt-bank-clean-energy-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hepis.gr\/getbusy\/en\/2017\/10\/31\/millennials-shouldnt-bank-clean-energy-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennials shouldn&#8217;t bank on clean energy jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the\u00a0<u>Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/u>, the job expected to see the most growth in terms of hiring over the next nine years is an energy-related job:\u00a0<em>solar photovoltaic installer<\/em>\u2014but Millennials beware\u2014the term \u201ctop growing\u201d is a bit misleading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The number of solar photovoltaic installers\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0expected to double by 2026, which sounds super promising on its own. Millennials, after all, are always looking for those meaningful jobs instead of those dirty oil-industry jobs, but millennials beware\u2014there were just 11,300 photovoltaic installers in 2016\u2014so that 105 percent increase in solar jobs would equate to an increase of just 11,900\u2014to reach 23,200 by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wind turbine technicians took the No.2 spot, projecting a 96.1 percent growth (from 5,800 in 2016 to 11,300 in 2026).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s just take a run at putting the solar jobs into perspective:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pizza Hut hired 11,000 workers just to tackle Super Bowl Sunday (and ensuring a smooth Super Bowl is, if I may be so bold, equally as fulfilling)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sears Canada just announced it was deep-sixing 12,000 employees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chesapeake Energy\u2014just one U.S. energy company, and not one of the biggest ones at that\u2014as of 2013, has 12,000 total employees, after laying off its chaplains and beekeeper (I promise I\u2019m not making this up).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most ironically\u2014and perhaps my favorite real-world example\u2014UK\u2019s solar industry alone shed 12,000 jobs in mid-2016 due to government subsidy cuts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to knock the solar and wind industries, but the low price of oil is doing alternative energy progress any favors. Add to that the precarious position the solar industry has now found itself in thanks to the\u00a0<u>repeal<\/u>\u00a0of the Clean Power Plan, talk of\u00a0<u>repealing solar tax credits<\/u>, and\u2014a potentially fatal blow if it materializes\u2014trade tariffs that could lead to \u201cproject cancellations worth billions of dollars and massive layoffs, to the tune of a third of the total number currently employed in the industry,\u201d wrote Irina Slav for Oilprice just last month. In light of this, the BLS forecast may prove to be a bit overly optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As for the rest of energy, coal jobs didn\u2019t make BLS\u2019s top 10 movers and shakers, and neither did the oil and industry, although the latter did make the top 30.
