{"id":3249,"date":"2017-12-12T16:11:13","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T16:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoplecert.wpengine.com\/getbusy\/?p=3249\/"},"modified":"2017-12-21T11:53:28","modified_gmt":"2017-12-21T11:53:28","slug":"programmed-former-facebook-executive-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hepis.gr\/getbusy\/en\/2017\/12\/12\/programmed-former-facebook-executive-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;You are being programmed,&#8217; former Facebook executive warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A former Facebook executive has criticised the social network for ripping society apart during a question and answer session.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chamath Palihapitiya, who worked as Facebook&#8217;s vice president for user growth, <strong>was speaking at an event run by the Stanford Graduate School of Business\u00a0<\/strong>on 10 November in which he described feeling &#8220;tremendous guilt&#8217; in helping the company attract two billion users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His comments echoed remarks by Sean Parker, one of the early pioneers of Facebook, <strong>who spoke on 8 November<\/strong>, saying the social network provided &#8220;a dopamine hit and a social validation feedback loop, that exploited a vulnerability in human psychology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, coverage this week has seen thousands responding to Palihaptiya&#8217;s words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works,&#8221; he told the audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He advised people take a &#8220;hard break&#8221; from social media, describing its effect as &#8220;short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Palihapitiya referred to <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>Facebook<\/strong> <strong>blog<\/strong> <strong>post<\/strong> in October which said an estimated 10 million people in the US saw Facebook adverts from Russia before and after the US presidential election. The blog said most adverts focused on &#8220;divisive social and political messages&#8221; on issues like immigration and gun rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was &#8220;no civil discourse, no cooperation, misinformation, mistruth and its not just an American problem, it&#8217;s not just about Russian ads,&#8221; explained Palihaptitya. &#8220;This is a global problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Russia has denied trying to influence the US election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">You may also like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Can<\/strong> <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>Facebook<\/strong> <strong>friend<\/strong> <strong>request<\/strong> <strong>be<\/strong> <strong>&#8216;harassment&#8217;?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Facebook:<\/strong> <strong>Now<\/strong> <strong>for<\/strong> <strong>young<\/strong> <strong>children<\/strong> <strong>too<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Facebook&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>AI<\/strong> <strong>wipes<\/strong> <strong>terrorism-related<\/strong> <strong>posts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In another example, Palihapitiya referred <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>hoax<\/strong> <strong>circulating<\/strong> <strong>on<\/strong> <strong>WhatsApp<\/strong> <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>village<\/strong> <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>India<\/strong>. He told the audience the rumour warned parents of child kidnappings which led to the lynching of several people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\">&#8216;You are being programmed&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We curate our lives around this perceived sense of perfection, because we get rewarded in these short term signals: Hearts, likes, thumbs up,&#8221; Palihaptiya said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We conflate that with value and we conflate it with truth, and instead what it really is is fake, brittle popularity that&#8217;s short term and leaves you even more vacant and empty before you did it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;You don&#8217;t realise it but you are being programmed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Palihapitiya said he could not offer a solution but deals with the problem himself by not using social media anymore, something which he says has caused tension with his family and friends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the critical analysis of social media, Palihaptiya says Facebook did overwhelmingly positive things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Details of the hour-long talk began to be shared widely after the Guardian reported on the remarks which had been published by <strong>tech<\/strong> <strong>website<\/strong> <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>Verge<\/strong> <strong>on<\/strong> <strong>Monday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Guardian&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>article<\/strong> has been shared on social media more than 8,000 times.
