{"id":3835,"date":"2018-01-15T11:00:04","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T11:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoplecert.wpengine.com\/getbusy\/?p=3835\/"},"modified":"2018-01-17T10:40:28","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T10:40:28","slug":"facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hepis.gr\/getbusy\/en\/2018\/01\/15\/facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Zuckerberg is fighting to save Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there&#8217;s one thing Mark Zuckerberg has consistently excelled at as Facebook&#8217;s CEO, it&#8217;s destroying his enemies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When\u00a0Google\u00a0(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a class=\"inlink\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=GOOGL&amp;source=story_quote_link\">GOOGL<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0launched Google Plus, a rival social network, Zuckerberg put\u00a0Facebook(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a class=\"inlink\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=FB&amp;source=story_quote_link\">FB<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0in a state of &#8220;lockdown&#8221; and informed employees that &#8220;Carthage must be destroyed,&#8221; according to one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2016\/06\/how-mark-zuckerberg-led-facebooks-war-to-crush-google-plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tell-all book<\/a>\u00a0from a former employee.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ie_column\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">After\u00a0Snapchat\u00a0(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a class=\"inlink\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=SNAP&amp;source=story_quote_link\">SNAP<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0began gaining traction several years ago, Zuckerberg tried to buy the company and, failing that, pushed out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/28\/technology\/facebook-snapchat-camera-stories\/index.html?iid=EL\">a long list of features and new apps<\/a>\u00a0to clone the disappearing messaging app.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Google Plus is no longer viewed as a threat to Facebook.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/08\/technology\/snapchat-stock-earnings\/index.html?iid=EL\">Snapchat is struggling<\/a>\u00a0to grow its audience. Now, Zuckerberg is turning his focus to a new enemy: Facebook itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Thursday, Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/11\/technology\/facebook-news-feed-change\/?iid=EL\">announced a major change<\/a>\u00a0to News Feed, its central feature, to prioritize posts from friends and family over posts from publishers and brands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The goal, according to Zuckerberg and Facebook, is to boost the &#8220;well-being&#8221; of the billions of people who use the social network by encouraging users to have more conversations and connections with peers, rather than being bombarded by brands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In short, Facebook wants to show the world that it can still be a positive force in peoples&#8217; lives &#8212; or at least show that it&#8217;s really, truly trying to be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the 2016 U.S. election, Facebook has come under fire for stories about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/09\/technology\/facebook-fake-news\/index.html?iid=EL\">fake news<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/10\/31\/media\/facebook-twitter-google-congress\/index.html?iid=EL\">Russian propaganda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/11\/09\/technology\/filter-bubbles-facebook-election\/index.html?iid=EL\">filter bubbles<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digital\/sean-parker-worries-facebook-rotting-children-s-brains\/311238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media addiction<\/a>. Facebook has also been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/27\/world\/asia\/myanmar-government-facebook-rohingya.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described as enabling ethnic cleansing<\/a>\u00a0in Myanmar and Facebook&#8217;s WhatsApp was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-40657074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited as a cause of beatings<\/a>\u00a0in India after a fake news story went viral.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suddenly, the most existential threat Zuckerberg faces isn&#8217;t some rival service. It&#8217;s his own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The media is increasingly fixated on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/20\/technology\/tech-dark-side\/index.html?iid=EL\">dark, unintended consequences<\/a>\u00a0of Facebook and other social networks. Regulators are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/10\/31\/media\/facebook-twitter-google-congress\/index.html?iid=EL\">scrutinizing the company<\/a>\u00a0more than ever before. Former Facebook executives have spoken out to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/08\/technology\/social-media-dark-side\/index.html?iid=EL\">express regret<\/a>\u00a0about what they built. And so has Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;For the ways my work was used to divide people rather than bring us together, I ask forgiveness and I will work to do better,&#8221; Zuckerberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10104074437830721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in a Facebook post for Yom Kippur in September.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Controlling the narrative at this juncture is critical, particularly when it comes to the press and regulators,&#8221; James Cakmak, an analyst with Monness, Crespi, Hardt, wrote in an investor note Friday morning about the News Feed change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps with that goal in mind, Zuckerberg has already gone on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/02\/24\/technology\/tech-trump-listening-tour\/index.html?iid=EL\">listening tour<\/a>\u00a0across the country,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/22\/technology\/facebook-zuckerberg-interview\/index.html?iid=EL\">revised the company&#8217;s mission statement<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/01\/technology\/business\/facebook-earnings\/index.html?iid=EL\">pledged to cut into Facebook&#8217;s profits<\/a>\u00a0to prevent abuse of the platform.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this month, Zuckerberg said<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/04\/technology\/mark-zuckerberg-2018-goal\/index.html?iid=EL\">\u00a0his personal goal<\/a>\u00a0for 2018 is to focus on &#8220;fixing&#8221; Facebook&#8217;s many problems. The short list he cited includes &#8220;abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The News Feed update is the first of those fixes, refocusing the company on the quality of time users spend on the platform, rather than the quantity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even if it ends up helping Facebook&#8217;s public image, there are other risks here for Zuckerberg. The News Feed change has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/losing-hope-facebook-tells-publishers-big-change-coming-news-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rattled publishers<\/a>\u00a0and investors who worry about it now being harder for businesses to reach customers on the platform. Facebook&#8217;s stock fell 4% in early trading Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then there are the societal concerns. If the last year has shown anything, it&#8217;s that seemingly banal product decisions can yield tremendous unforeseen consequences. By prioritizing content that sparks conversations with friends, Facebook could risk promoting more polarizing and opinionated posts that generate lots of comments, only adding to the filter bubble.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But inaction isn&#8217;t an option for Zuckerberg either. Not only is he trying to protect Facebook&#8217;s image, he&#8217;s also trying to protect his own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/11\/technology\/facebook-news-feed.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one interview<\/a>\u00a0published Thursday, Zuckerberg suggested a renewed interest in his legacy following the birth of his two children: &#8220;It&#8217;s important to me that when Max and August grow up that they feel like what their father built was good for the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/12\/technology\/facebook-news-feed-change\/index.html\">money.cnn.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If there&#8217;s one thing Mark Zuckerberg has consistently excelled at as Facebook&#8217;s CEO, it&#8217;s destroying his enemies.
