{"id":3994,"date":"2018-01-23T12:52:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T12:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peoplecert.wpengine.com\/getbusy\/?p=3994\/"},"modified":"2018-01-31T10:30:22","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T10:30:22","slug":"wealth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hepis.gr\/getbusy\/en\/2018\/01\/23\/wealth\/","title":{"rendered":"The 1% grabbed 82% of all wealth created in 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">More than $8 of every $10 of wealth created last year went to the richest 1%.\u00a0That&#8217;s according to a new report from Oxfam International, which estimates that the bottom 50% of the world&#8217;s population saw no increase in wealth.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ie_column\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Oxfam says the trend shows that the global economy is skewed in favor of the rich, rewarding wealth instead of work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The billionaire boom is not a sign of a thriving economy but a symptom of a failing economic system,&#8221; said Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The head of the advocacy group argued that the people who &#8220;make our clothes, assemble our phones and grow our food&#8221; are being exploited in order to enrich corporations and the super wealthy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad_nat_btf_03\" class=\" adfuel-rendered\" data-google-query-id=\"CN7PhpCL7tgCFVIh0wodJOsCtA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/8663477\/CNNMoney\/economy\/main_4__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The study, released ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, was produced using data from\u00a0Credit Suisse&#8217;s\u00a0(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a class=\"inlink\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=CS&amp;source=story_quote_link\">CS<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0Global Wealth Databook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlights the detrimental effects of gender inequality with data that show more men own land, shares and other capital assets than women.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rising inequality has been a major topic at Davos for years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oxfam said Monday that it is time for the global elite to stop talking about inequality and start changing their ways.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to find a political or business leader who doesn&#8217;t say they are worried about inequality. It&#8217;s even harder to find one who is doing something about it,&#8221; said Byanyima.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many are actively making things worse by slashing taxes and scrapping labor rights,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oxfam said that governments should focus on policies that would lead to fairer distribution of wealth and stronger workers&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These could include introducing a living wage, supporting labor unions and tackling gender discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Governments also need to tackle tax avoidance and put limits on shareholder returns and executive pay, Oxfam said.
